Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic imaging test used to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels. The cross-sectional images generated during a CT scan can be reformatted in multiple planes, and can even generate three-dimensional images which can be viewed on a computer monitor, printed on film or transferred to electronic media. CT is fast, painless, noninvasive and accurate. In emergency cases, it can reveal internal injuries and bleeding quickly enough to help save lives.

Depending on the type of scan that you are having you may be asked to change into a gown to avoid parts of your clothing affecting the scan. Some tests require no preparation, these include: brain, sinus or facial bones, temporal bones (inner ear), spine, knee or wrist and CTs of the bones.

Many types of CT require an injection of a contrast material to show blood vessels and some organs. Additional contrast may be given depending on the examination required. Some examination may require empty stomach. For these tests, we will ask you to fast before your appointment. Fasting for 2–4 hours is common, and it is usually permitted to drink water over this time to avoid losing too much water from your body.
